Great idea. There’s a Redskins site that does something similar, which I always found useful, if only because I could look at a lot of draft pages!
Side note: you gotta turn off that profanity filter! It totally cramps my style.
Jan 14, 2009 at 01:54:23
This is a great idea, I also used the Redskin’s site last year for the same thing and thought it was really convenient.
I will however never understand why people are making mock drafts right now..
Jan 14, 2009 at 01:59:11
@Soc
Sorry man - if I take down the filters, I start getting insane amounts of spam. I appreciate you dealing with it, though. I know it’s a pain.
@Dave
Yeah - I mean, anything in January is kinda ridiculous, but at LEAST wait until the declaration deadline! Weird.
Uh - also - I probably should have waited until after the deadline since ALL of these are going to change then… but whatever. It’s done!
Jan 14, 2009 at 12:03:12
Four thoughts:
1. Thanks for doing this. It’s awesome.
2. I am really leaning away from William Moore. Mays was the only first-round safety that intrigued me.
3. There’s no way we take Sen’Derrick Marks. He’s a 288 lb. UT/DE tweener. We have that guy in Amobi.
4. Terrence Cody is high on my list. 6-5, 385?!? THERE’S your NT of the future.
Jan 14, 2009 at 12:11:01
Re: 4. Dang, Cody has said he’s staying in school. Stupid jerk letting education get in the way of my perfect defensive line.
Jan 14, 2009 at 13:59:19
@Matt
I’m (shockingly) totally with you on Moore and the safety position. I had been convinced that Mays was a can’t-miss prospect, and the only safety worth a first round pick for us - unless we traded waaay down in the round - and even then, there will be others.
The thing about Cody that makes me hopeful is that he made his “decision” early… like a month ago - so maybe he’s had time to think about it change his mind… I dunno. Cody was the guy I originally wanted before I started to sway to wanting Mays.
With Mays and likely Cody not declaring… I’m just not sure right now who my #1 want is. Orakpo will be gone, Everette Brown will probably be gone - I just don’t know yet.
Jan 14, 2009 at 19:57:43
I’d be interesting in knowing why the usual suspects (i.e., us) aren’t talking about LB. I guess my feelings are that we can get by with what we have, that there are bigger fish to fry, but I say that if we manage to stumble across an elite LB prospect, we’ve gotta take him. If Frank Bush wants to blitz, let’s give him some blitzers.
Jan 14, 2009 at 20:00:06
Holy f*ck - I just noticed one mock has us taking Michael Crabtree. That would be ridiculous. At any rate, I have to imagine someone would trade with someone in the top 10 in order to draft him, before we’d ever get a chance at him.
Jan 14, 2009 at 20:06:47
@Soc
Man - sometimes you really read my mind. I’m working on an entry right now about the linebacker thing now that Taylor Mays is gone.
Jan 15, 2009 at 07:39:09
Where’s MEL KIPER when you need him.
Looking at a few of these drafts my first thought is “Hey,the Texans should trade down!”
Mel has never steered me wrong. His pick is destiny(lol).
Jan 15, 2009 at 10:40:49
@Soc- I saw one draft that had us taking Maclin. Huh?
@LA26- I hope Kiper has choked on his hairspray. I can’t stand that guy.
Jan 15, 2009 at 20:25:22
I’m still most pissed at the one that has us taking Sen’Derick Marks. Seriously, a 288 lb DT might make me lose my mind. And not in that good way.
Jan 15, 2009 at 22:09:28
Chris - great work updating this thing, man! Expect to have about 180 comments by the time this thing is over with.
A guy that runs one of these mock drafts is a guy I’ve e-mailed with for the past two years and have e-mailed this year as well, over at draftking.com. We’re not personal buddies or anything, but he’s published a few of my e-mails and I’d like to think my comments have swayed his perception of the Texans. He lives in Nashville and is a TV and radio producer, and his mock draft is one of the more popular ones on the internet. He’s had Vontae Davis with us for a few weeks now, and I suspect a lot of the smaller mock drafts are starting to adopt his reasoning. I don’t necessarily agree with the pick, though. It’s interesting to see the updated mocks showing a lot more of Davis than we saw just a few days ago.
Jan 16, 2009 at 15:48:24
@Soc
Well, he’s got us taking Vontae Davis. I can’t imagine that going down unless something goes tragically wrong with Dunta.
Jan 17, 2009 at 12:29:43
hope we sign dunta.
i know we need D, pretty much every position, but crabtree would be insane next to AJ.
but realistically i like orakpo if we trade down, or getting RAYRAY in the MLB, and moving demeco outside.
signing J pep would be like xmas in july

Hi I am writing to inform you that I have updated my MD at http://www.luckylester.com/2009/01/2009-nfl-mock-draft-1/

Lance’s mock depresses me. The thought that Maualuga, Brown, Maybin, and Raji would all be off the board makes me sad… and makes me hope we trade down.
Jan 23, 2009 at 18:44:01
I am sure I have said it before, but I will say it again: I think the true value in mock drafts is not in their predictive powers (they are horrible at that), but that they help you illustrate and get an understanding of what the other teams in the league need.
I like Lance Z’s mock, with a few exceptions: 1) there’s no way the Texans throw MORE money at the defensive line with a player like Peria Jerry, who plays the same position as a guy we drafted only two years ago… you don’t pay that much money to deliberately rotate guys; 2) the Jaguars aren’t going to go CB; if things shake out like he has it up to that point, I could see them trading down (especially after losing their a$$ last year by trading up); 3) Crabtree doesn’t last until #10, no way no how - someone will trade up for him.
I will scream at the top of my lungs all off-season so long as people are putting the Aaron Maybins and Everette Browns of the world in our lineup as defensive ends. That’s f*cking ridiculous.
Jan 24, 2009 at 15:21:29
This tool is the best. A+++++
Jan 25, 2009 at 14:36:30
THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID!!!!
Jan 25, 2009 at 15:21:37
Is there a way that this can be tabulated, and show the %’s of who’s listed? IE, 30% have Everette Brown, 15% have William Moore, etc, etc. I would guess, as we get closer, they will start widdling themselves down to about 5 candidates or so.
Not trying to make more work for you, as I think this is awesome, but that would be interesting to see.
Jan 27, 2009 at 14:21:12
The Crabtree mock actually has us taking Maclin.
That will never happen.
Jan 28, 2009 at 09:26:46
I dont know how this might come out on your end but I went ahead a broke down the mock drafts but which position people think we need the most. looks like DE and Safety are the two positions people think we need the most. followed by CB and DT. I didnt know if this would help you or you could add this to your site.
Michael Johnson DE Georgia Tech 8
Aaron Maybin DE Penn State 5
Everette Brown DE Florida State 6
Brian Orakpo DE Texas 2
Tyson Jackson DE LSU 2 23 31.51%
William Moore S Missouri 18
Taylor Mays S USC 4 22 30.14%
Vontae Davis CB Illinois 14
Malcolm Jenkins CB Ohio State 2
Sean Smith CB Utah 1
DJ Moore CB Vanderbilt 1 18 24.66%
Peria Jerry DT Ole Miss 3
BJ Raji DT Boston College 1 4 5.48%
Jeremy Maclin WR Missouri 2
Michael Crabtree WR Texas Tech 1 3 4.11%
Chris Wells RB Ohio State 1
Knowshon Moreno RB Georgia 1 2 2.74%
Clint Sintim LB Virginia 1 1 1.37%
Feb 4, 2009 at 00:29:04
It’s interesting to see the group-think develop around the internet about the Texans’ needs. They are probably using each others sites to justify their picks, too.
Feb 5, 2009 at 23:07:05
Hey, I noticed you linked to one of my mock drafts and I just put up a new one so thought you’d be interested in seeing it. Here’s a link:

Feb 5, 2009 at 23:42:27
@weller: Why in the world would we draft Sanchez when we have Schaub?
Feb 6, 2009 at 01:29:27
I feel like I’ve read somewhere that the Texans aren’t really satisfied with Schaub… and even if they are, do you really think he’s the long term answer at QB?
Feb 6, 2009 at 01:40:47
I guess I could have given you guys Tyson Jackson instead… you guys should read the couple of sentences I have after the mock draft itself, because if anyone wants to be our Texans rep that would be awesome.
Feb 6, 2009 at 09:16:37
Dude, we are picking defense, defense, and then may defense. We might pick up a complinmentary back in the 4th. Schaub is a pro caliber QB based on play over last half of last season. If we can keep him upright, we have no offensive worries. Jackson ain’t happening at 15 either. Think top DE, DT & LB on the board, and that is who we will take. If our guy not there, we WILL trade down.
Feb 6, 2009 at 17:15:08
Ok, I’d agree with that, but I’m not doing any sort of trades in my mock drafts, and the next best DE was Tyson Jackson…
Feb 6, 2009 at 23:58:15
The Texans love Schaub, and I promise you we wont draft a QB in the first. In that situation my pick would be Michael Johnson. I like him a lot, and dont understand his recent slip in mock drafts. He has always been knocked for a lack of production, but he was productive his senior season. I expect him to have a great combine and climb back into the top 15 and not be available at 15 on draft day. Plus, unlike Tyson Joackson, Johnson is quick enough for Kollar’s defensive line.
Besides Johnson, there arent too many players I like left, but some other guys to consider there are CB Vontae Davis, SLB Clint Sintim, or maybe even Jeremy Maclin as a value pick.
Feb 9, 2009 at 21:30:32
Right now it’s so hard to pick at 15..If i’m having reservations of choosing, I can’t imagine what the other 17 teams behind us are thinking…would they want to trade up? I’m all about trading down, but if no one wants to dance and givin who I believe would be available, I pick Michael Johnson DE Georgia Tech…I too feel he will climb up the board after the combine.
Feb 12, 2009 at 00:06:21
Hey, I just put up another new mock draft, hopefully this one makes you guys a little happier, lol.
Here’s a link to it:
http://classic17.wordpress.com/2009/02/12/2009-nfl-mock-draft-viii-212/
Feb 13, 2009 at 21:39:56
Weller, I respect that you are putting in the time to do these mocks, but the Texans are probably not going to draft any offensive players in the first 2 or 3 rounds unless somebody ridiculous falls to them (Michael Crabtree, draft him goddamnit).
I wish trade downs weren’t so hard to predict because that would be what happens I’m willing to bet. Especially if DE’s just fly off the board.
Feb 14, 2009 at 19:41:09
Run your own draft simulation. You can input team needs on offense and defense, and even exclude the selection of particular players:

thank you for listing our mock draft. May we include you on our site as well? Hands down, you are the best Texans draft site on the web!

HI, SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH, I AM FROM MONTERREY MEXICO, I HAVE 37 AND I LOVE MY HOUSTON TEXANS, TKS FOR THIS SPACE.
I JUST HAVE A IDEA, SOMEBODY SAY THAT WE CAN TRADE WHIT THE CARDINALS, AM I RIGTH? AT WHAT PRICE, 2D ROUND WHIT A 4 ROUND? MAYBE? AND OF COURSE HIS FIRTS ROUND THE 31, OK?
WHAT HAPPEN, IF WE GIVE OUR FIRST ROUND #15 TO THE LIONS, AND THEY GIVE US IN RETURN, HIS 2 ROUND # 33 ( TWO AFTER THE CARDINALS SELECTIONS) HIS 3RD OR 4 ROUND, AND HIS 1 FIRST ROUND OF THE NEXT YEAR, ITS A CRAZY IDEA?, I NEVER SAW THAT SOME BODY SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THIS.
WHIT THE #33 2D ROUND SELECTION OF THE LIONS, WE CAN HAVE A VERY GOD PLAYER, WHAT DID YOU THING, AGAIN SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH, AND GO TEXANS.
TKS TAKE CARE
Mar 12, 2009 at 20:12:41
Marty,
I’m all for trading down with anyone who gives us a good offer. The real value in this draft is the second round, far as I can tell.
If we were to trade down with Arizona, I would think a realistic offer from them would be their first pick, third pick, and a late-rounder. Moving up 16 spots is a pretty huge leap, so I would expect them to get a pretty nice package in return.
If you look at it using the NFL “trade chart” the package for the Texans would be really, really sweet - but there’s just no way they’d offer that much. The Texans would probably have to settle for a first and third or in the MOST optimistic situation - a first and second… but I don’t think that’s realistic.
Mar 12, 2009 at 20:38:40
HIR CHRIS, AND AGAIN SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH, BUT CHRIS, WHAT HAPPEN IF WE CAN TRADE WHIT DETROIT LIONS HIS SECOND #33, HIS FIFTH ROUND, AND THE NEXT YEAR FIRST ROUND, WHAT DID YOU THINK, THE 4 ROUND IS DALLAS IN EXCHANCHE FOR WILLIAMS.
AND DETROIT KEEP OUR #15.
JUST CHECK OUT THE TRANSACTION THE LAST YEAR BETWEN THE EAGLES AND THE CAROLINA PANTERS.
I THINK ITS POSIBLE, BUT, WE JUST TALK, I DONT KNOW, I THINK THE NEXT YEAR DRAFT ITS BETTER THAN THIS ONE IN FS AND SS POSITION, BUT I DONT KNOW, ITS JUST MY IMPRESION, AND TKS FOR ANSEWER ME.
AND CERVEZA Y TACOS FOR EVERY ONE… OK AND MUJERES LOL.
TKS TAKE CARE.
Mar 24, 2009 at 11:55:57
I think we need to grab a big name safety or CB in free agency, taking one in the first round is a waste of a pick. I do like the trade down option in order to get a S or CB that would be ideal.
Mar 24, 2009 at 11:59:25
Ohh and another thing…. does anyone know what they were smoking in the front office to pay Dan O that kind of money? We saw how good he is last year with the dumbest safety ever in the NFL. There are plenty of QB’s in the draft, i like Pat White… Maybe not the most conventional but the boy can play. Look at Steve we werent disappointed with him and we obviously like whats coming out of MoTown WV..
