Postgame reaction: Eagles 34 Texans 24

Posted by: Chris on December 2nd at 11:58PM

Well, what can I say? The game pretty much went as I thought it would go. Fairly close, but as expected, the Texans’ defense couldn’t stop anyone. When the Texans briefly took a 24-20 lead, it was hard to get too excited considering Vick and the Eagles were about to take the field again.

I’ll probably be kind of scarce for a couple of days, as I’m staying in Philadelphia with family through the weekend – but when I get back I will share my fantastic experience at the Texans/Eagles game. I had a great time, and yes – I caught some hell but for the most part, these supposedly ferocious Eagle fans were, for the most part, a bunch of pussycats.

Honestly, I’ve seen opposing fans in Reliant catch MUCH more hell than I did. But Philly fans are a lot of fun. Their taunts of Matt Turk and Neil Rackers kept me laughing, and they kept their reputation for cheering opposing player injuries by wildly celebrating in our section when Matt Schaub went down right before the end of the first half.

I’ll share much more in a few days, but for now – please keep the conversation going for me as I enjoy a couple of days with family. In short, it was the same old story. The Texans couldn’t get any timely stops on defense, and the offense was inconsistent and often times predictable. Much more to come when I’m able.

Why is nobody mentioning the time allowed to be run off the clock before that challenge? The refs allowed 1:20 to run after the ball was spotted without resetting the playclock. I don’t know if a penalty negates the ability to challenge like getting off the next snap does, but it at least would have put them in goal to go with 15 yards to cover.

This game went a lot better than the blowout I expected. For a nanosecond, the Texans even had a lead. I thought the Eagles would march up and down the field at will all game. Instead, they just did that in the first and fourth quarters. This loss, for all extents and purposes, eliminates the Texans from the playoff race, which, frankly, I’m okay with. I think it’s better to miss the playoffs than watch this defense get throttled in January. Plus, it saves us from having to watch this defense 5 more times. Instead, the toture is limited to 4 and thanks to the schedule we have a 10 day vacation upon us. At least on the defensive coaching side, I’m hoping for a slew of pink slips when the season ends.

Did everybody else, except those that didn’t see the game, see our defense actually get after Vick? It looked like we came out in our same old passive, bland defense until we were down 17-3. Then, when we have nothing to lose, we dial up the pressure and we’re back in it. Then, we go back to that same old Defense that we all hate and we lose.
I know our offense isn’t our biggest problem, but I still hate the playcalling. I rewound one play where they fake it to Foster to set up the pass, but it looked like everyone dropped into coverage or were taking outside paths to the QB. The whole middle was just vacant. Had they given it to Foster, he’d still be running. I know they can’t guess right everytime, but I’m convinced other coaches have Kubiak completely figured out. They know what play he’s running before he does. It’s been a long season.
