Mock Draft Tracker update: Dan Williams rising

Filed in: Draft Talk, Free Agency, Houston Texans & NFL
Posted by: Chris on March 9th at 11:47PM

Check out the Mock Draft Tracker for the latest update. Dan Williams is shooting up the board all of a sudden. I believe he was only on the board once on the last update, but now he trails only Earl Thomas. CJ Spiller has also shown up, which I’m happy to see – and Ryan Mathews (yes, that’s Mathews with one “t”) is also on the board.

Also making a surprise appearance on the tracker – Joe Haden. Big overreaction, there. No way Haden lasts to 20. When he has his Pro Day, I’m sure he’ll get right back in everyone’s good graces.

Tomorrow I’m going to launch “2010 Offseason Central”. For those of you who weren’t around last offseason, it’s basically a one-stop shop for all the collected offseason transactions for the Texans. Trades, FA signings, FA visits, etc. I will even post rumored free agent visits – as long as I can find a link online somewhere.

If you have some other mock drafts you think should be included on the Tracker, please shoot me a link in the comments and I will consider it.

I think the Texans are going to surprise with the 20th pick. I hope they are able to trade down for an extra pick and take Ryan Mathews. Then in 2/3 in whatever order a guard/center and a cornerback. Maybe Pouncey and McCourtney

trade down and take pouncey…. he wont last past 28…

cant take RB in the first unless it is spiller.

we need OLINE talent not a first round RB

@allenOU: 03/03/2010 – Oklahoma cornerback Dominique Franks left school despite a third-round projection from the NFL’s College Advisory Committee. He’s worked the last two months on improving his time in the 40 yard dash. He said he was worried pro scouts wouldn’t like him as much because he’d previously run high 4.4s, and said his goal at the NFL Scouting Combine was to run a low 4.3. Instead, Franks on Tuesday was clocked at 4.52 and 4.57

@1Tex – hahaha, same mocks as before, promise!

I dropped a few that hadn’t updated in a long time. I’d like to include Kiper and McShay, but theirs are ESPN Insider-only. Meh.

Alot mock drafts has the Texans taken Wilson at 20. I sure hope they’re wrong.

I like DB Thomas or Mays, RB Spiller or Mathews
so We’ll get either a DT or LB, Williams, Price or Cody, OLB Sean Weatherspoon.

    John, I like picks.

Let me clarify two things about two players that a lot of Texans fans want.

Earl Thomas – NOT GONNA HAPPEN! I am finishing up a mock draft on DraftDebacled.com in which, with Earl Thomas AND Dan Williams available, we trade down with New York to swap some late-round trash with their 2nd rounder and THEY DRAFT EARL THOMAS.

We have never spent a Top 100 pick on a safety, and we won’t in this current regime. All of those mocks that think we would take Thomas forget that Kubiak is molasses-slow on giving up on players, and Eugene Wilson is no exception. They’ll draft a safety, but I’d be more expectant of Major Wright or Kam Chancellor in the fourth round.

    2. Kyle Wilson – Kyle Wilson and Devin McCourty are 2A and 2B as far as best cornerbacks after Joe “Ears like Ross Perot” Haden (NOTE: I just had to mention the ears. From now on, his nickname is “Fadin’” Joe Haden. Thank you.)

The difference between these two is run support. Wilson DOESN’T. McCourty DOES. Kyle Wilson fits a 3-4 scheme where he will never be expected to do anything except cover his man. There’s nothing wrong with that. It is what it is.

Devin McCourty is an inch taller, ran a faster 40, and is willing and able in run support. PLUS, he’s probably the best special teams player in the entire class. No, I’m not talking return man (though he can), I’m talking the other stuff that nobody cares about, but Houston is one of the best at, and drafting players like this is why. (Also, he has seven career blocked punts.)

I’m not trying to bash Kyle Wilson, but, considering that everyone loved Pay Me Rick for his run support, replacing him with a guy who sits on run plays doesn’t make sense to me.

Oh yeah, and I have changed my draft strategy for the Texans:

    1. Trade down and draft Ryan “One T” Mathews
    2. If no offers, draft One-T at #20.
    3. If trade down and your mole in the San Diego front office says they are going to draft Mathews, trade back up and draft Mathews before San Diego.
    4. If One-T goes in the Top 19, pitch a hissy fit, draft nothing but tight ends the rest of the draft. Try to trade for Mathews after the draft.

(NOTE: This isn’t me, this is my perception of the Texans front office. I believe they have absolutely hit man-crush level RED on One-T)

Dom franks will be the fourth best CB in the draft when it’s all said and done.

And he ran a 4.47 40. I know what it says around the interent, but that don’t mean crap. I know for sure this is accurate

Haden mccourty Wilson franks. He will be better than cox, ghee, Jackson.

Which means he won’t be a texan.

I Absolutely don’t think the Texans are going to take a DB in the first round. This is a pretty deep draft for that position. I think they’ll get on in the 3rd.

I look for them to trade down and take a RB or DL….

FYI, according to Kuharsky, Kiper and McShay both picked Kyle Wilson on Wednesday:

Their overblown opinions aren’t worth the money, but this one’s free.

I still think they will trade down and go for Matthews, if not taking him at 20. Kubiak always wants to run the ball, and now that Gibbs isn’t there telling him that first-round running backs are a waste, I think he makes his move.

In the second round, a lot of good guys will be avilable. I’d love to see the Texans use that bonus pick they get from trading down in the first to trade up in round 2 and get Devin McCourty. He’s my favorite non-Haden CB and it’s not even close.

I really hope they don’t tak a RB in the first. I’m starting to think if we could get a trade down and then get nate Allen…. FS of the future and I think he will be better than Earl Thomas. There are plenty of backs that can be had in the second or third, mainly hardesty and dixon

Dwyer actually doesn’t have more upside. He is what he is. Matthews has way more upside, but more risk.

If Bradford isn’t the first pick. Well he will be so.

I really dont like the idea of RB in the first but it looks like its coming so Mathews whta this team needs in a running back? oh and i dont like the idea of spiller being a Texan

  26. kyle
    Mar 15, 2010 at 20:19:43
    #26

I doubt that the Texans take C.J. Spiller. To me, Spiller is a rich man’s version of Steve Slaton, and that’s not what this team needs.

This team needs a runnig back who will scare defenses while Gary Kubiak forces the run because “that’s what they did in Denver”. (I’m sorry, but your QB just beat Peyton, Brady, and the rest of the NFL in passing yards, and we’re STILL a run to set up the pass team? REALLY?!?)

They also need someone who, given six opportunities to punch it in from the one, can do it AT LEAST ONCE. If we had that in Chris Brown, then we’d've made the playoffs.

Then again, if we had a kicker who could kick a game winner fifty percent of the time, we’d be in the playoffs, too.

I think the only thing that would knock One-T out of the running for our team is if our scouts determine that he can’t block. Chris Brown remained on the team as long as he did because he was the best blocking back and it wasn’t even close.

By the way, to answer your question: if Spiller and Mathews are both on the board, we’ll trade down. Ryan Mathews is not worth anything more than the 27th overall pick, because I don’t think any team is seriously looking at him except us and San Diego (who may be more interested in Jonathan Dwyer).

    @otto

Unless we can confirm that the Chargers would rather have Jonathan Dwyer in round 2 over Mathews in Round 1, we’re not going to trade further down than Arizona and Dallas. Either way, we get at least a third round pick. (With Dallas, we could also swap our first sixth rounder for their fourth)

That said, Minnesota would probably be willing to trade up if Mike Iupati is still on the board, or if they fall in love with either Kyle Wilson or Devin McCourty.

    @TK

I doubt he would have fallen further than SF’s second pick anyway. His film is too good.

You may prefer to hope that the team can secure Donovan Warren in Round 3. Both Walt and Matt from walterfootball.com think Warren is an exceptional corner who’s going to get docked for a bad 40 time.

  37. TexanKurt

    @kyle

I don’t see anything wrong with that (Warren I mean). It’s not like I holding my breath on Joe Haden. That was more of a wet dream anyway.

I do, on the other hand, hope they don’t take Ryan Mathews. I’m reading BUST here. The guy looked average to me when I checked his youtube highlights. Big gaping holes, inferior competition, Fresno State, Fresno State, Fresno State… I sure hope the Texans have learned their lesson on Fresno State. I can see a cornerback or linebacker from that conference, but that’s it. I say spend the first three picks on the secondary and defensive interior line and then take Oregon RB LeGarrette Blount in the 4th round, a Brandon Jacobs type who can go get you the two yards for the first down and stick the ball in the end zone once you get inside the ten. To hell with scheme, the Texans need someone who will run with authority.

  38. BigTexansFan

I say we definitely go with a RB in the first round. Whether it be spiller switching spots with one T because of Mathews every down back status, or us landing the explosive one T. However if both running backs are gone, I say we go defense with Taylor Mays. NO CB IN THE FIRST ROUND UNLESS ITS HADEN!!!

  39. kyle
    Mar 18, 2010 at 06:56:40
    #39

    @TK

At first, I totally was all about drafting a power back compliment to Slaton (I preferred Gerhart in the third), but, now, I think we really need to consider a featured back because we have no idea how Slaton will recover from his neck injury, and Gerhart, Blount, and Dixon are not guys who can “do it all”.

At this point, we’re either going Mathews in Round 1, or Hardesty or Ben Tate in Rounds 2 or 3. We need someone who looks like they are powerful yet quick enough to still be a home run threat. If that RB pans out, Slaton can develop his pass-blocking and become a legitimate third-down back.

Also, when I say draft Ryan Mathews, I’m a little bit lukewarm to the idea myself. I’d rather take Devin McCourty at #20, then see what I can see in rounds 2-4. However, I just get the impression that Kubiak LOVES One-T and will do what’s necessary to get him. Plus, we should be able to trade down and still get him. That extra third round pick will be valuable since we have four positions where we need an early-round talent (CB, RB, FS, DT).

you guys are crazy if you want matthews at 20.

how much better is he than hardesty or tate. equal in my eyes, and i bet hardesty doesnt last till are second round pick.

believe it or not, i wouldnt mind taylor mays

  41. TexanKurt
    Mar 18, 2010 at 15:00:43
    #41

Well, at least Allen doesn’t think I’m crazy! Yet…

I don’t see Mathews as better than Hardesty. In fact, he might be worse.

Here’s the thing that intrigues me about LeGarrette Blount: he’s cheap. The guy was in the Heisman discussion before the season. He runs a 4.6 and weighs over 240 lbs. He runs low, unlike Mathews and his upright running style. He’s basically a second round talent that can be had in the fourth round because he punched some dude from Boise St. That allows you to fill the three need positions on defense – FS, CB and DT – in the first three rounds. He’s bigger than Hardesty and has equivalent speed plus you can snag the starting CB in round two if you go FS/DT in round one.

I know it won’t happen, but it opens up the real possibility of drafting four starters with four picks. If the Texans go RB in the first two rounds, I don’t see that happening.
