The Texans have made their RFA tender offers

Filed in: Free Agency, Houston Texans & NFL

According to John McClain via his Twitter account, and the Chron.com article:

DeMeco Ryans – 1st and 3rd round picks.
Owen Daniels – 1st and 3rd round picks.
Bernard Pollard – 1st round pick.
Rashad Butler – Right of first refusal, plus original tender (3rd round pick).
Ryan Moats – Right of first refusal, plus original tender (3rd round pick).
Chris White – Right of first refusal, no compensation.
Tim Bulman – Right of first refusal, no compensation.
John Busing – Not tendered.

No surprises there. I was a little surprised that Pollard was tendered as a 1st rounder, but hey – that just further ensures that he’s not going anywhere. I don’t think anyone will touch Owen Daniels at that level, but DeMeco Ryans might be worth it to a team on the verge. As Matt Jackson said on his Twitter account: “You’re Minnesota with one more year of Favre…Surely you give up a #30 pick and 3rd rounder for Demeco Ryans to replace EJ?”

Definitely something to think about. Something to worry about? Probably not, but DeMeco is in the prime of his career and you know what you’re going to get with him. It wouldn’t shock me if someone made a serious run at him.

I have a bad feeling. Demeco is a goner.

I’ll glady take the picks but it’s a shame if he does go.

Nah, I think it’s highly unlikely. Where do you see that he could end up – a team that has a need PLUS the ability to give up that much?

That said – it doesn’t have to be a 1 and a 3. The Texans can rescind that and renegotiate to a different compensation package.

I am kind of hazy on this, but what’s the incentive to a team to not just apply 1st and 3rd round tenders to every player? The salary costs associated with it, I would guess. I think you have to pay them 110% of the previous year’s salary.

Maybe you tender a guy at a level that you think is tempting to other teams in order to get him off your roster and get that pick in return? (Pollard, for example)

Well the Vikings I think could be a strong contender for demeco. Maybe the giants.

But other than those two. The vikes scare me. They are allready stacked. Could give is a 1 and 3 and use their 2 on APs back up

Allen OU – good call on Giants. They definitely need a MLB and DeMeco would flourish there.

Let’s take a step back also and realize that we – Texans fans – are afraid of other teams wanting our players. Since when is that the case?!

Socctty, that’s a great point. This is the first year that has ever been the case. It makes the offseason that much better

I’m off to welcome back Carl landry!

I dont see DeMeco leaving. I think the Texans match whatever is offered. No one will touch Owen and pollard so Im glad to see them back.

Glad to have you back here chris.

Rick Smith and Gary Kubiak have a better chance of streaking across reliant then demeco has of being traded. If Minnesota gives us a 1, 3, and possibly rosenfels and adrian peterson then we will make that trade. Otherwise there is no chance. Now Owen daniels coming off an injury, I could see them taking that deal. that is why we went tightend happy in last year’s draft. demeco on the other hand is the best thing we have going on defense and it would go against the model of the texans franchise. I do not think ryans and Daniels will be touched by another team. the interesting one is pollard.I could see a team offer a 1 st for. the rest of the players will be texans unless we rescind the tender offers.

You guys are missing the point on DeMeco. He’s not going anywhere. If the team is going to match the offer sheet for David Anderson, THEY WILL MATCH RYANS’ OFFER. That said, if I’m the Giants, I’ll still take a swing.

The bottom line on the RFA tenders is that you CAN NOT ASSUME there will be football in 2011. If there is a lockout, then all those contracts are wasted money. The gigantic amount of RFA tenders for us and every other team is just smart business. Daniels, Ryans, and Pollard are all smart enough to know this, and you can expect that they will understand. This isn’t “Pay Me, Rick”. This is, “Contract year.”

On that note, if Ryans makes ANOTHER Pro Bowl and helps lead this defense to the playoffs, imagine how much he’ll be worth. Ray Lewis in the twilight of his career got almost 15 Mil a year. Ryans could legitimately see Albert Haynesworth money. He’s not stupid. He will show it on the field.

Besides, that RFA tender may not be what he deserves, but it IS a 3 Million dollar raise, so if he starts whining, he deserves to be smacked.

I don’t think Minny could sign DeMeco. They are handcuffed by being in the final 4 in an uncapped year. They would have to lose someone of like salary to sign him if I understand correctly.

Glad to be reading your work again, Chris.

I’m pleased with all the tenders – even with DeMeco’s. If Minny made the offer I’d try to work out a deal. Maybe Ryans, and our 3rd…for their 1st and 2nd?

Sean Weatherspoon could play LB for us tomorrow. He’s a fit at either WLB or MLB. Remember, Ryans played WLB in college. Kubiak wants his MLB’s fast. Problem is they get the tread worn off their tires quickly, and as much as I hate to say it cause I love the way the guy plays the game, Ryans will start to show that wear and tear real soon.

Please, please make that phone call Minny.

My bad, the Vikings have restrictions only on any Unrestricted free agents they can sign. They are indeed free to pursue restricted free agents. In that case I might be a little worried about the Vikes or someone else making a run at DeMeco or Owen.

    @ Truth

Just so you know, It’s not a matter of a Trade, These guys are Restricted Free Agents. The Texans have to Match any offer made to them by another team, or Recieve a 1st and 3rd round draft pick as copensation.

I still think we all overvalue demeco just a bit

he is strictly a 4-3 MLB in my eyes, which eliminates half the league anyway

I think dikes in the middle with a weatherspoon or Washington on the outside would do just fine.

Don’t forget, the vikes could add some crazy incentive in the deal that could say if demeco played 8 games in the state of Texas, he would get a 15 mil bonus. Playing for Minnesota would negate this, but if the texans matched they would have to fork it over.

If I’m Minnesota I do whatever it takes to get him. And don’t be so quick to think the texans would match and not be happy with the two picks…

I think the league has issued stern warnings to the teams on poison-pill provisions, but I don’t think there is a rule against it – just the ire of the commissioner.

I see Johnny Jolly was issued a tender by the Packers, but no one knows what it is yet. He’d be a good get, as he’s 6’3″, 320lbs, and from Houston. But he’s facing charges for trafficking codeine so there’s that whole angle… Packers probably like having their D-line as it is anyway, and would match.

    @B-RAD
All I was saying was you can rescind the franchise tender and make a trade for the right compensation. what I was getting at is a 1st and 3rd is not going to be enough. I know that Minnesota would not offer that for demeco. I could see the texans doing it for owen but not demeeco

    I don’t know about that.

Minn only weakspot ia at MLB and possibly CB

they will have favre back and one more year to win the big one

    it’s also what pick 30 and 94…?

If the texans were in the same spot I would gladly give up those two picks for the one player I believed would get me over the top

it won’t happen your right. But I’ve seen crazier things, like CB acting like a QB

Look at it from Minnesota’s perspective. Will anything they get at 30 be a guaranteed pro-bowl caliber player? You don’t get a chance to win it all every year, and their window is closing fast. Not just with farve, but also their D-line isn’t getting any younger. The elite talents at LB and CB will be gone before 30, and even if they draft the best player available, it is by no means a guarantee that he will even see the field next year.

While DeMeco is no doubt overrated, he is everything you want in a top tier signing. He’s young, productive in the 4-3, has good leadership skills and an excellent work ethic. But most importantly, he’s proven.

Why in the hell would Minnesota give up 2 picks in the first three rounds when they could go after Karlos Dansby from the Cardinals who is an UFA?? Makes more sense economically, and while he’s not 25 like Demeco, he is ONLY 28. That is my .02.

I don’t see a team just forking over 1st and 3rd. I’d only take him for a first and maybe a 3rd next year, but the Texans are not going to poison their locker room by trading away its leader.

  23. Allen OU

    Never say never.
And dansby is a weak side guy who could play in the middle, but the vikesneed a tackling machine and demeco is just that

and their first rounder is way back in the late 20′s.

If we got that pick plus a third next year. You have to consider it, especially if the contract they offer him is outlandish…

On a kind of unrelated note, I saw that Carolina had a 2nd round tender on their CB Marshall. I’ve heard some good things about him, but really don’t know that much.

Would he be worth a look-a starting CB with 4 ints for a second round pick? Not that the Texans have a history of raiding RFAs.

I’m not so sure there will be a lot of free agent activity. The idea of giving someone like Dunta Robinson a lot of guaranteed money before a probable lockout probably won’t sit well with GMs and owners. Regarding DeMeco, I’m not sold on the idea that the Vikes will go after him in part due to the uncertainty of a lockout. Why take an older player, give the Texans rights to two new younger players and give DeMeco a contract so good the Texans won’t match only to watch DeMeco collect his guaranteed money and sit out a year? They don’t even know if Favre is coming back. And they got burned on the Hershel Walker trade years ago with the Cowboys. This article from the New York Times gives an interesting economic take on the limitations of this free agency. The lack of a cap may not play much, if at all, in players’ ability to make out with a lot of cash in free agency. DR, for example, may have trouble finding a good deal. We’ll see.

    @Pat

I’d rather draft a CB with future #1 potential. Marshall is a good to great #2, but we don’t have a #1 to go with him.

    @Allen OU

Dunta is 90% certain to go to the Falcons. He’s from there, and they NEED corner help. The only problem is that, if we are smart and are negotiating with Leigh Bodden’s agent, his price tag will be set by the pending Dunta deal. They’re pretty much 1A and 1B, so whatever Dunta gets, Bodden will want.

I think we should lure Bodden with a long-term deal and STILL draft a cornerback in the first three rounds.

However, from what Pancakes is telling us, it looks like we’ll trade down with Dallas and take Ryan Matthews. It shouldn’t surprise anyone because we have a knack for taking the player San Diego wants before they can. (they would’ve taken Duane Brown, and they were rumored to like Brian Cushing)
