Ahahahah, good ol’ ESPN.
Via Rotoworld (and originally found on TexansTalk) ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that once the Chargers inevitably cut LaDanian Tomlinson, that the Texans will be interested in his services.
Here’s how this works. Do the Texans have interest in LaDanian Tomlinson? Sure. Does EVERY TEAM IN THE NFL have some level of interest in LaDanian Tomlinson, even at this advanced stage of his career? Sure they do!
But, do the Texans have any interest in LaDanian Tomlinson at the price he will command? A price that someone else in the league will surely offer him? Hell no.
All it takes is a broad and general statement like “the Texans have interest in” and you’ve got yourself an NFL insider.

Doesn’t need the money. Maybe wants to be back in Texas. Sure he wants a ring. Why not pick your spot instead of going where the money is

No interest in old running backs here. Just my opinion of course, but I see his tank as empty. Pass unless he agrees to a contract at or near the minimum with some reasonable incentives.

Maybe his decreasing production, explosiveness, and ypc is directly correlated to Philip Rivers’ growth as a tool.

I think our RB situation is more in our line. Slaton had a sophomore slump, he’ll be back. Foster finished strong. Moats had one good game. Chris Brown did nothing…
What I think we really need is a 1000 yard receiver alongside Andre Johnson. And since Houston has so much to worry about in this draft, I’m not sure they’ll want to use a pick on one. I wonder why nobody has signed 6’2″ 230 lb. Jamarko Simmons out of WMU. One of NCAA top receivers in the ’08 seasons and he has great hands. He’s just like Dwayne Bowe

I think those guys missed their calling as either politicians, or used car salesmen.

CHRIS;
i just sent you my first mock
take it easy on me its the first EVER
Feb 8, 2010 at 21:03:22
Ladanian Tomlinson is the next Edgerrin James, Shaun Alexander, Priest Holmes, Ahman Green, or whoever else you want to name. In other words, he’s washed up. \Period.
Feb 8, 2010 at 21:31:24
@Carson
So what you’re saying is, you think the Texans are probably going to sign LT?
Feb 9, 2010 at 00:29:26
Haha KO really funny comment. Really hating how we did not sign benson.Since we are on fogie runningbacks and I am a texas fan, How bout Ricky Williams?
Feb 9, 2010 at 00:39:27
Ricky Williams is under contract for one more season, and I see no reason that Miami will cut him. He’s played as well or better than his salary.
Now – Willis McGahee is a guy who is a very, very strong candidate to get cut for salary purposes. He’s a really good one-cut runner and I think he’d be a great fit for us.
He’ll be 29 in March, so you’d have to give him a “cautious” or smart contract. He’s been pretty durable, just missing a couple of games here and there.
Problem is, I think once he does get cut that he’ll actually be able to command a pretty high salary. Higher than the Texans will be willing to pay. In fact, when he gets cut I would imagine he will be the top RB FA, unless I’m forgetting someone.
Feb 9, 2010 at 10:09:26
What about Chester Taylor. He would be the starter here
Feb 9, 2010 at 10:58:10
@Carson
Priest Holmes was not washed up! He was a top-shelf running back who got screwed out of the Hall of Fame by a helmet-to-helmet collision from Shawne Merriman that messed up his spine.
When he came back in 2007, it was not “another washed-up back”. It was one of the most amazing stories of recovery that the NFL had seen, and, after he played, he noticed tingling in his hands, so he retired instead of stupidly facing further injury.
The bottom line is that Priest Holmes deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, but he won’t because he didn’t have a long enough career to reach the all-important 10,000 rushing yards.
Sorry. You’re just badmouthing my all-time favorite player there. I can’t let that one go. :^)
Feb 9, 2010 at 11:53:23
@ Kyle
Thanks for saying that because now I don’t have to. However, I thought it was a horse collar tackle from Merriman that injured his neck. I’m with you that Priest Holmes will go down as possibly my favorite player. He was the definition of a team player and he did it all. He always gave credit to the O-line and was humble about every opportunity he got. Physically, he was not that special, but he did whatever it took for the team to win. Plus, how many great goal line RBs do you know who are also 5’9″? Seeing him jump over the O-line into the end zone was always impressive.
Feb 9, 2010 at 11:58:58
It was a horse collar. And holmes was great and one of my favorite backs other than AP. Look what happened to KC since he has been gone. One good year and then back to the cellar.
LJ is out there too…
Feb 9, 2010 at 20:28:14
Whoa, fellas!
I’m not bad-mouthing Priest Holmes. He was a dynamic runner who rightly gave credit to his O-Line, and for good reason, since he ran behind the best line in the NFL.
Still, he’s another example of how short-lived the life of an NFL RB is. With him it was his neck. With Marshall Faulk it was his knees. With Brian Westbrook it’s concussions. With Tomlinson it’s his knees and his ankles. Whatever the injury, the position takes its toll.
Just saying that I hope the Texans have no interest.
Feb 10, 2010 at 02:21:25
@ Carson
Actually, Brian Westbrook is the legs too. The concussions were just this season and that’s because he tried to get back on the field before he was fully recovered. Still love Westbrook though. I would take Westbrook over Tomlinson because Westbrook still has life in his legs.

@Carson
I got ya, man, and you are right about the running backs. It really hits you when you compare HOF entrants Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith. Rice, granted the greatest WR of all time and it ain’t even close, was still productive at 40 years old. Consider that you are advised to avoid any running backs that are over 30, that’s telling about how hard being a running back is.
Back to Priest, my favorite thing about him was that he was consistently unappreciated, and it never fazed him. He led UT to the first ever Big 12 title in a HUGE upset over Nebraska, but the Longhorns quit on him for Ricky Williams, and he was fine. Goes undrafted to Baltimore and has a 1000-yd season, and helps them win the Super Bowl, and the Ravens quit on him for Jamal Lewis. Then, the record-setting year with the Chiefs (where he literally carried my fantasy football team).
Feb 10, 2010 at 12:03:53
I won 1200 in fantasy that year because of him and Kurt Warner. Those were the good days and my freshman year of college …
Feb 10, 2010 at 14:33:56
Heard of james starks from buffalo. RB. Got Injured and may fall to undrafted. Kid would be perfect
Feb 10, 2010 at 15:13:20
After reading your comment, Allen, I looked into James Starks. The reports are somewhat promising, but I am getting the feeling that Starks plays a lot like Steve Slaton, so I don’t know if he’s the perfect fit for us.
http://www.sidelinescouting.net/rankings/rb.shtml
Based on that website, I’d definitely say we should take a look at Brandon Minor of Michigan. The problem, of course, is that he won’t be able to perform at the Combine, so he’s very likely to go undrafted, so we will hopefully fall right into our hands.
Feb 10, 2010 at 15:14:33
Side note: This is not to say that I like him over Gerhart. Gerhart is still our man.
Feb 10, 2010 at 16:37:58
@Kyle
I have a cousin who watches alot of buffalos games and the kid looked legit
the Steve slaton Interview on houston texans .com was very promising
and I’d LOVE to see Chester pitts back starting
Feb 11, 2010 at 01:42:33
@Allen
I’d be fine with picking him up in the late rounds, but I really hope that the Texans draft somebody early instead of last year where they apparently threw a hissy fit when Glen Coffee was drafted over them.
