Yep, it’s that time! If you weren’t around these parts last offseason, you missed the Mock Draft Tracker. Luckily, it’s back for more. Here’s how it works – the first table shows which players have been chosen the most as the Texans’ first-rounder. Presently I’ve got 32 mocks on the list. Last year at it’s highest, I think I had it up around 80. I may or may not take it that high this year once more mocks come out.
The second table is simply every mock draft I’m pulling from, in order of the most recently updated.
Right now, Earl Thomas is the guy. Just for some historical perspective, last year there was an overwhelming early favorite as well. His name was Aaron Maybin. He was by far the most-often picked Texan early in the process… yet, after the Combine and all the way up until draft day – Brian Cushing was #1. So last year, it actually turned out to be accurate.
As always, I’m open to suggestions, criticisms, etc about the Tracker. I’m always looking to improve it without it becoming a monster that I won’t have enough time to keep up with.
I will also be re-launching “Offseason Central” at some point. Probably once we get closer to free agency. For a taste of what that’s like, check out last year’s version of Offseason Central.

I’m glad it’s back.
It’s funny you bring the Aaron Maybin thing up. I think signing Antonio Smith (I’m glad we didnt pick him or have a chance to pick him because I didnt like the fit) changed that. Lets see how those %s change the next few weeks, Free Agency will certainly do that.

Looks like you left off Mel Kiper and his ESPN crew of know-it-alls. Nothing wrong with that.
Feb 4, 2010 at 16:17:36
Yeah, no Kiper, McShay, Mayock or Rob Rang. Take that you mainstream media whores!
Feb 4, 2010 at 17:05:55
Yeah, screw those guys!
I totally left them out on purpose – it wasn’t just an oversight on my part!
Uh… yeah… totally… accidental…
*blush*

Anything with espn is garbage. I watch only when a game is on. Even herbstreit is a tool…
Out of all those guys…
Dan Williams > Earl Thomas > everyone else
dan Williams
Nate Allen
CB or G/C ?????
Tate or hardesty or gerhart or ????
This was a great idea. Kudos to chris
I might have to do a mock, but no longhorns in my top 100 picks…
Feb 4, 2010 at 18:33:28
Allen, if you do a mock email it to me and I’ll post it as a guest entry.

The praise for Earl is such that you would think he would hold that position as a pro-bowler for many years…whether it’s true or not who knows. I just know I’m not reading the same level of praise heaped on anyone else available at 20, so I would happy with locking down the free safety position for the next bunch of years hopefully. At least we could feel relatively sure it wouldn’t be a Travis Johnson type pick.
Feb 4, 2010 at 19:10:13
I worry about his size a little but think he can get bigger. Is he even 21 yet. I think the bust factor is relatively low and he played big in big games for the most part
Feb 4, 2010 at 19:12:16
Who’s up for taking another UT?
I’m surprised none of these mocks have any OT choices. I think it’s a possibility if the right guy is still on the board and we don’t address the O-line in the off-season.
Feb 4, 2010 at 22:30:34
If you REALLY wanted to get crazy, you could throw all this into an Access DB or an Excel sheet. You could even weight the mock-drafters based on (A) how well they nailed the Texans pick [1 pt for correct player, .5 pt for correct position, 0 pts for anything else], and (B) for how close they were on the draft position the Texans are in this year.
Seems like you got a lot on your plate as it is, though!

Once I re-update it in the next couple of days, can I get my Draftdebacled.com entry thrown up there?
Feb 5, 2010 at 15:56:03
Of course, Kyle!

Steve Slaton had a disc removed from his neck. That certainly puts an emphasis on RB. So basically all Rick Smith has to do now is make the phone call to Chester Taylor and tell him he’s the starter, right?
I mean, how hard of a decision is that? Be a backup in Minny with more than likely no Brett Favre, or start at RB for one of the best offenses in the league? Sounds simple enough.
If some team outbids us, and we don’t draft a back, this looks the crew in a worst-case scenario:
Arian Foster
Ryan Moats
Chris Henry
Jeremiah Johnson?
oh my…

@Carson, how about this guy in the 2nd or 3rd

I’d be OK with him in the third. We need to use that second round pick for a CB. There are a lot of good CBs to take in the second. In watching that video, I never noticed Gerhart’s footwork. I knew he had strong legs, but he keeps his balance very well.
Feb 6, 2010 at 22:38:01
I like Gerhart, and I think he may slip come draft day as a result of the Combine. That’s ok, because the tape doesn’t lie. He’s a tackle breaker. I wouldn’t, however, use a 2nd round pick on him. If he falls to the 3rd, then maybe.
Feb 6, 2010 at 23:59:43
I´d take him in the 2nd, so as not to lose him. This guy bangs it…he´s got the attitude, and red zone will no longer be an issue. Here´s the Heisman voting.
Alabama running back Mark Ingram won the closest Heisman race in history on Saturday. Here’s a breakdown of the voting:
Player 1st place Total
Mark Ingram 227 1,304
Toby Gerhart 222 1,276
Colt McCoy 203 1,145
Ndamukong Suh 161 815
Tim Tebow 43 390
Feb 7, 2010 at 01:13:32
I wouldn’t put much stock in the Heisman voting. Heisman winners don’t usually do well in the NFL.
Feb 7, 2010 at 03:18:02
The thing that worries me is the fact that the PAC 10 is full of butter soft defensive units throughout.
I have a feeling he won’t even be in the texans eye at all for some reason. Just a gut feeling really.
So that means we will take him in the third
I wonder what backs would be available in the fifth with the Travis Johnson pick???
Feb 7, 2010 at 15:41:39
@AllenOU
If we are waiting until the later rounds, we might be looking at Tennessee’s Montario Hardesty. Some could argue he’s a one-year wonder, but this one year he managed to beat out a five-star freshman running back for the starter job and ran well.
You’ll hear the same argument against him that you heard against KFP. We have the guy who beat him out for a starting job before, so why would we believe he’s better.
That said, I’d REALLY like us to get a beefy guy to pair with Slaton. Hardesty’s intriguing, but, at 215, is he REALLY going to be able to pound out the 3rd-and-short-they-know-we’re-gonna-run plays?
I’d seriously prefer Toby Gerhart for his size, decepetive speed and ctuback, and IQ. I’d be okay with Dixon for his size. Anyone else may struggle to fill the void that we have. All of our running backs can have decent games, but we didn’t lose two games because of poor running. We lost them because we didn’t have a player who could punch in a one-yard goal-line dive, so the ability to do that is all I care about in the running back we potentially draft.
Feb 8, 2010 at 07:31:39
You may wish to only consider, those mock drafts that turn out to be correct for the most first round picks, or those that are most often right for the first 10 picks.
Feb 10, 2010 at 10:51:05
Someone mentioned the Combine, and I think we really have to use the combine to our advantage.
I can name three players who I expect to have poor Combines who would be great members of our team.
Donovan Warren, CB, Michigan – He doesn’t have elite traingle numbers and he can’t return kicks, and he couldn’t participate in the Senior Bowl so he doesn’t have the momentum that Ghee, Cox, and McCourty have. That said, Matt McGuire considers him the second best CB in the draft. He’s likely to be available at #50.
Toby Gerhart, RB/FB, Stanford – You notice I mention “FB”. The Combine is going to cause people to question if he’s the Great White Jerome Bettis, or just the next Mike Alstott. If teams consider him a FB, then he will easily fall to #80.
Blair White, WR, Michigan State – Currently projected in the fifth round, and his Combine is not likely to fix that, but this is a guy who can fill the role K-Dubz has brilliantly worked the past two years. How awesome would it be to get a STARTER in the FIFTH ROUND?
If we can combine him with Brian Price in the first, Myron Rolle in the fourth (fingers crossed), Zoltan Mesko and Jonathan Crompton in the sixth, and that’s a fantastic draft.

The above link is my mock draft at draftdebacled.com. It’s four rounds long and a LOT easier to read through than at my HTML-challenged website. Enjoy!
P.S. The Texans DO NOT draft Earl Thomas in my mock! And you won’t believe who the Oakland Raiders draft to replace JoeMarcus Montana!
