James Casey also out for a while

This will be a short one, as I’m testing my capability to make entries by phone…

In addition to the season-ending loss of TE Owen Daniels, Gary Kubiak announced today that TE James Casey is also going to miss some time due to a knee injury.

Casey will miss the Colts game, and Kubiak speculates that he could be healthy enough to return after the week 10 bye.

I expect the Texans will sign another tight end now that they are down to only Joel Dreessen and rookie Anthony Hill, who has been inactive in every game this season.

All of a sudden, one of the deepest positions on the team is one of the weakest. A very difficult matchup with the Colts just got that much tougher.

What about Connor Barwin? I wonder if he could get the routes down in time.

As much as I’d like to see us have atleast 3 TEs dress Sunday, having Barwin, Dreessen, and Hill would still only give us 1.5. I don’t think Konservative Kubiak thinks outside your box…

@Carson, I would expect us to be able to find someone on the street that will do better than Barwin at TE. First of all Barwin already has his plate full learning how to play DE. Secondly, he obviously wasn’t the greatest TE if he was moved to DE in college. The only way I could fathom seeing Barwin at TE would be in goal line situations.

Of course you make valid points. I’m just speaking of using him in a pinch. The way Belichick uses his guys.

We’re better off getting a real TE, even if its just for a week. We’ll have the extra roster spot from putting Daniels on the IR.

I think with Hill and Dreesen we’ll be nearly back to where we were in OD’s first season, we’ll have a TE who can catch and block well, and one who doesn’t catch much but blocks well. For the time being I wouldn’t think a 3rd TE would be pressing as we just need to get through this one game, Casey should return after the bye. If not a TE I’m not sure what position they’d look at to fill that roster spot.

what about resigning harris the guy that deep snapped for us. I do not know if he got picked up. but I imagine he would be a great fit because he knows the system and with dressen being are only reliable tightend, I think it would be better to have harris doing that. What do you guys think?

He would be the first choice, but he was signed by the Bengals the week before we played them. They cut their previous deep-snapper so it sounds like Harris is their guy for the whole year unless he melts down.

The Texans probably are going to need another deep-snapper. With Dreessen getting the snaps at TE and Casey hurt, the next snapper is Zgonina. I won’t be shocked if they end up picking up another snapper as well as a TE, but of course they’d have to cut someone to do both of those things.

It’s a shame that the trade deadline has passed. I’d love to toss that bonus 6th round pick we got for Travis Johnson to get Anthony Becht from Arizona. On top of being at least as good a tight end as anyone off the street, he has Colts experience, and it’s not like the offense in Indy has changed in the past 5 years.

The real problem with our sudden lack of TE depth is that, as Chron.com reported, we are forced to abandon our multi-TE sets. If our primary passing attack involves multiple WRs, then we are playing into the Colts’ hands because, with a similiar offense, it means they won’t have to worry about altering their practices to accomdoate this week.

I have to say I find it very hard to imagine beating the Colts, but, after all, I don’t see them going 16-0 so someone has to beat them. Plus, I’m literally 0-8 this season on predicting the outcome of the Texans games. Seriously. 0-8. I predicted a loss to the Raiders, 49ers, and Bills. I guess I should just focus on the draft. :^)

@ Allen. Was that you I beat in fantasy? I almost forgot what the feeling of victory felt like. I feel like Darryl Morey. All my moves and trades paid off for me.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Kubiak is pretty upset about losing both tight ends this particular week. I would think that three tight end formations would be the bee’s knees against the Cover-2 Colts.
