Fantasy football draft date and NFL picks league

Posted by: Chris on August 11th at 4:22PM

Settling on a draft date
I sent out an email about this to all the players, but I’ve only gotten a very small amount of replies so far… and I know it hasn’t been that long since I sent the email out, but I want to get this thing locked up.

So rather than start a long discussion where we all suggest dates and times, I’m just going to set up a date – and you guys can react to it here or contact me via email. It’s not set in stone, but with 14 players, there’s just no way we will be able to make everyone happy.

Weekends are sketchy when you’ve got 14 people, so I figure we’ll set the date up close to the start of the regular season, and in the evening late enough to be after work, but early enough that it won’t run too late into the night. Starters won’t play much in the last preseason games, so the date and time I’m proposing:

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2th @ 8:00 PM CENTRAL

I’m thinking the draft will take approximately an hour, maybe an hour and a half, maximum.

Let me know what you think of that date.

Rules/points discussion

1 – IDPs: I’ve already had a few people expressing their desire to not include IDP’s (individual defensive players) and I’m fine with that. We’ll have a defensive team, but no players.

2 – PPR: The league will be a PPR (points per reception) league. WRs will get one-half point per reception.

3 – Roster positions:
QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, WR, TE, RB/WR flex, K, DEF/ST, 5 bench players. Thoughts?

4 – Waiver rules: The waiver wire will work like this… to start the season, the last pick in the draft will have the first waiver priority. Once a player uses their waiver claim, they move to the bottom of the list. The waiver list will NOT reset weekly according to standings. To me, this introduces a little more strategy into the league, because you won’t waste your waiver spot… and you can hold on to it as long as you want for when a player you REALLY want shows up on the waiver wire.

I’m not going to reward bad players by giving them the top waiver position every week, and I’m not going to punish good players or patient waiver users by snatching their ability to use their high waiver claim just because the standings change.

Waiver time is 2 days.

5 – Playoffs: The top 8 teams make the playoffs. Playoffs will take place in weeks 14-16, so that teams resting starters in the week 17 games will not affect our fantasy football championship.

6 – Scoring: You can view the scoring settings here. Feel free to suggest changes here or via email.

NFL Picks League
I’ll sift through previous comments of those that wanted in and I’ll send out invites for our picks league. I’m not going to set a limit on the amount of people who want to participate, so opt in now or opt in later – doesn’t matter.

Prizes?
There will be a prize for the winner of the Fantasy Football league. It won’t be a big deal, but it will be something. Last year, the prize (for the picks league) was a very nice Texans pilsner beer glass… but since I dominated that league and won it, I didn’t have to pony up. This year, I think there will only be a prize for the FF league… but I might come up with something for the picks league as well.

Just to reinterate, you name the time, that’s when I’ll draft. Scoring looks fine to me, cool with the flex position, and definitely happy with no IDP. I cannot wait to destroy everyone!

The draft time works for me, too. And I still want to be in the picks league.

Sounds good to me. I have a function I have to attend that evening at 6:30 bit will hopefully be home by then. I’ll set it to auto draft just in case. Scoring is fine with me albeit it unusual. I’ve always played the 10 yards per point. What is the “return yards” on the offense scoring?

Everything looks good to me. Luckily I live in Austin too so if you want to save money on shipping I can meet you somewhere for the prize.

Why 3 WR’s? Teams play with 2? How about just 3 rec, 1 of which must be Te (in other words you can play more te’s, just not wr’s)? im good with all the rest, esp waiver rules.

Everything is good to me. But 3 WRs and a RB’WR spot too? That PPR is really going to change drafting strategy.

Is it weird to have 3 WRs? I’ve played in (and won) a lot of FF leagues, but I’ve never been the commish before. If it makes more sense to do 2 WR and one WR/RB flex – let me know and I’ll gladly change it.

I never seen it before. I guess because I always used ESPN. But I have NO problem with it what so ever. I play with any rules, its for fun. I just know when I saw it and I was thinking what I could do if I had 4 WRs starting on my team on any giving week with PPR in place.

KD – I’ve never been in a league with only 2 WRs – but now that I think about it, it does seem a little weird to me to have three WRs AND a WR/RB flex.

I think I’m going to change it to 2 WRs and a WR/RB flex.

Objections? Other suggestions? Would people prefer that it’s a WR/TE flex instead of a WR/RB flex?

2 WR would be better, especially since there are 14 teams, right!

I’ve always played QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, TE, Flex (RB/WR), DEF, K.

And yes, with 14 teams all our flex players would be scrap.

    I vote 1 wr, 1 te, 1 wr/te flex.
