Texans visited w/ Packers DE Mike Montgomery

You can track rumored, reported, and confirmed free agent interest and visits by clicking “Free Agent Visits & Rumors” in the Offseason Central box above.

Here’s some more DE news out of Reliant. It doesn’t appear that the Houston Chronicle caught on to this, but the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Packers unrestricted free agent DE Mike Montgomery visited with the Texans on Monday.

Montgomery met with the team and took a physical, but so far no contract has been offered. The Packers have now extended an offer, so if the Texans are still interested – they’ll probably have to act fast.

Montgomery, 25, started eight games in 2008 opposite Aaron Kampman. He registered 59 tackles (43 solo) and 2.5 sacks. He’s 6-3 and 273 according to his NFL.com profile. Looks like he could be a very solid backup for the Texans, who as I just wrote earlier have recently rescinded their RFA qualifying offer from Earl Cochran, ostensibly (but not officially) ending any chances he’ll return to Houston in 2009.

Montgomery was drafted by the Packers in the 6th round of the 2005 draft. He played his college ball at Texas A&M.

Hey ya bring´n da scoop! And he´s about the right age and experience to be coming into his own in that position. About anything should be an improvement.
Way to go on finding out about this!

you are on it like usual.

    i have a scenario.

lets say in some odd fantasy world that both raji and jerry are off the board, both qb’s, and both matthews and cushing, as well as orakpo and brown, which i dont think they would target anyway.

could the texans conceivably take maclin.

    i like

    raji
    matthews
    maclin
    jerry
cushing……in this order as to how good i think they will be.

a 4 WR set with AJ DA KW and maclin…WOW

I just happened to be burning the midnight oil last night and caught the update on Rotoworld, which led me to that Milwaukee site. Thanks for the kind words, guys.

You scooped him Chris, but pancakes finally has the story up on the chron site. He states that the Texans aren’t expected to sign Montgomery, but that is clearly opinion and not fact. That’s not reporting. He added that Cochran has been released. He ran a fluff piece in todays paper that had no new information whatsoever. That’s not reporting either.

Off subject: I was reading the Detroit scribblings about DanO:
    http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2009/03/dan_orlovsky_on_the_huge_show.html
and you come to realize, we Texans don’t have it so bad, although sometimes it seems like we’re the butt of the jokes around the NFL. My personal favorite comment was a guy expecting Schaub to get hurt, and DanO to take us deep into the playoffs or superbowl. They feel that WHATEVER happens, they are screwed. I just gotta smile, cause we’ve been there and now we’ve got Kubiak who even has their respect. Made this draft and next year seem a whole lot brighter. Kool Aid anyone!
