Texans keep David Anderson – impact on Jacoby?

h/t to KD for the heads up.

[EDITOR'S NOTE] Since the comments have turned more into a discussion about Jacoby Jones than David Anderson, I changed the title of this one.

The Texans have matched the Broncos’ offer sheet for restricted free agent WR David Anderson. 3 years, $4.5 million, with a $1 million signing bonus.

I didn’t think they would do it. It seems like a lot for the #4 WR on the depth chart, but in reality – he’s a better slot receiver than Andre Davis (who isn’t a slot receiver at all), so he probably has more value to the team than the average #4. Plus, he’s proven in games and in practice that he’s a good player, a hard worker, and you know – a good dancer.

Alright, no more dancing cracks from me until the next time he does it. I promise… I know I’m too rough on the guy for it. I’m glad we have some guys with personality.

The Broncos probably figured to try and change Anderson into their version of Wes Welker. Instead, Anderson stays with Houston and I would think will see his role increase in 2009.

My question to you is – what, if anything, does this mean for Jacoby Jones?

If it was me, it would mean that Jacoby became a full-time punt returner, and, if he didn’t get better, he’s gone next season,

I personally prefer if my kick and punt returners are backups so that 1) your depth players are still getting field time, and 2) if he gets hurt, it has a minimal effect on the offense (imagine if PIT’s Santonio Holmes went down for the season on a kick return that Mewelde Moore could have fielded).

This all comes down to DA. If he becomes an effective slot man, this deal works out and Andre Davis becomes the kick returner and back-up X (playmaking wideout) and Jacoby becomes the punt returner and back up Z (slot)

BTW, if I got the wideout letters wrong, please correct. The mroe terminology I know, the more I can pretend to actually know something about football. :^)

i guess this puts my jeremy maclin to the texans thought in the tank.

i wonder if we trade back into the mid 20′s, or even get one of the first 8 picks in the second and wells or moreno dropped, would we take a shot…

wells and slaton would be pretty solid

This might also mean that Kyle Shanahan as a full time offensive coordinator plans to run more 3 and 4 wide receiver sets. I mean the NFL rules do favor passing offenses, and if you’re gonna pass you might as well have many targets. You’re bound to hit something in the 3 seconds you’ve got. The smaller quicker linemen might get you another second also.

I think that it means that the Texans are going to the draft for another running back and another kick returner. They may not have matched/overpaid for Anderson if they were going to use some of that money on the likes of Ward or Benson. Since they now have a fairly large chunk of money in A. Davis and Anderson, I think that they let Jones go if they can draft another return specialist. That’s just a gut reaction, though.

I’m with kyle. This means that JJ better either become a legit homerun threat as a punt returner or he’s probably out the door. With AJ at X, Apostrophe or K-Dub at Y, and DA at Z (as well as OD), there’s just not enough balls to go around to really think JJ will be a viable receiving option.

Yeah, I gotta agree on Jacoby.

A lot of us talked about this at length at the end of the season – it’s definitely decision time on him. Myself and several others said that he would get one last shot this training camp – but that’s IT. It’s MORE than enough time for him to get over the issues he has.

Somewhere I read a media guy who said Jacoby isn’t the most popular guy among his teammates. Hopefully for his sake he doesn’t do anything stupid again this offseason.

Picking up the contract for David Anderson means he will be seeing more time on the field this year. I wanted the Texans to take Dillard from Rice and give him a chance. This move means that we probably won’t draft a WR at all.

    @Matt

    That is what she said

    @ killer kyle
How does this move affect us drafting Clint “Platinum” Sintum or whatever you called him.

On a serious note, I like this move because there is nobody out there that screams sign me at wide receiver and it would create another need position. although I agree we overpaid for the future dancing with the stars contestant, I think it was a good move. I think he can improve on his numbers from last season also.I think Jacoby Jones (and me) stays. It will be a situation where Gary challenges him to improve ans I think he will. He has done this in the past.

When I was watching ESPN one time, they were discussing the decline in Devin Hesters return abilities, and I believe it was Bill Cower who said, “Very rarely do you have a guy who is an excellent full time receiver and full time returner. There is only so much time in a week to practice, and returning and route running are both time intensive activities. It is expected that is a kid is going to be a starting returner and receiver, you need to expect a little downturn in production in both.” That was not an exact quote, but I do believe he had a point.
If Jacoby knows that for him to be on the field, he needs to be an excellent returner and forget about playing receiver for the time being, I think we will see an upturn in performance, especially if he spends the majority of practice time fielding kicks.

    Let me throw this out.

The Broncos obviously thought DA was worth the contract and a 7th.

What if they now call and offer a 5th?

for a fifth……done. we would have ALOT of options in the draft, and could then get a STUD RB earlier if one were to fall….i like where this is going

For a fifth, Rick Smith should help David pack and give him a lift to the airport.

If Matt Jones can stay out of jail Should the texans pick him up?

    @ Otto
Thanks for the comment and welcome to the site!

That would be a resounding no on Matt Jones. The reasons are obvious. Let the Raiders or Cowboys take a chance on him.
