The Broncos say that Jay Cutler is not on the trading block, but as everyone knows by now - Cutler’s very upset that new head coach Josh McDaniels seemingly tried to trade him to the Bucs anyway.
I like Jay Cutler. I know he runs his mouth, but he hates Philip Rivers, and that makes me an instant fan. If Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are in the “top tier” of NFL quarterbacks, I think Cutler is probably at the bottom of the second tier.
So, although he has all the makings of a franchise quarterback, apparently there are still some people who think the Broncos might try to move him, since the cat is way, way out of the bag on the attempt to ship him to Florida.
One amusing scenario has him going to Minnesota, right after the Vikes traded for and extended Blue Steel Hawk Down aka The Rosencopter. If that were to go down, I think Sage might just literally go on live television and cry until someone dragged him out of frame.
Quicker to the point now - I’ve brought it up before how insanely frightening the Tennessee Titans would be right now had they not drafted Wonderlic Six and instead picked Cutler. Obviously, that’s a lot of hindsight - but just think of how much better they would be… and they’re already pretty damned good.
Anyway - I know they have agreed to terms with Kerry Collins, but is the deal DONE and SIGNED? I can’t find confirmation on the Titans official site, but it appears the deal is done according to NFL.com.
*exhale*
Still, with Collins signed and tons of money tied up in Vince Young, would the Titans make the boldest move since they moved to Nashville by trying to package some early picks for Cutler? He played his college ball in Nashville at Vanderbilt, he’s unquestionably one of the top young QBs in the league already, and he’d obviously be a huge local hit. A team like the Titans, as good as they were last year - might be able to part with their first and third round picks (the alleged price the Bucs were going to pay for Cutler), even with the loss of Albert Haynesworth.
Then of course, they’d have some fancy financial gymnastics to perform. Not because of cap room - they have plenty of it - but you can’t have three guys with huge contracts at QB.
For the ridiculous upgrade they would get at the position, do you think the Titans would make this move? I think they should try, despite the fact that I would probably just fall over and die if it went down. It would be a TON to give up, but with Cutler, you’re not talking about an unknown prospect. It would create problems, but who cares? So what if you just signed Kerry Collins - it’s KERRY COLLINS!
So what if you have a lot of money sunk in to Wonderlic Six - Cutler’s realistic upside is obviously much higher. Cut bait with Vince and get your QB of the present and future. If Collins doesn’t like it - and he won’t - deal with it after the deal is done.
Sure, it’s a bit reckless - but the Titans have cap room. If they were ever going to get themselves into a financial sh*tstorm like this would cause - this would be a good time to do it since they’re not in cap hell at the moment.
Of course, this is just to stoke some more conversation. This is less likely than Julius Peppers in Steel Blue. Even if the Titans were interested, there’s no way the Broncos would do that deal for anyone but Matt Cassel. They’d have to get a QB in the draft, and there’s obviously nobody available better than Jay Cutler, so they’re just going to have to make that thing work no matter what.
There’s a little non-Texans talk for you guys to kick around. Now I’m going to go hide in my closet and worry about this.

Basically, if a move improves Bud Adams’ team, then I will usually be against it. This situation is no different. Screw Bud Adams.
Derrick Ward just signed with the Buccaneers.

@Carson
Yeah, I already updated the Benson/Ward post. Honestly - I don’t want either of them. I want the RB from NC State!

I went to Vanderbilt at the same time that Jay was there, and he is no fluke. We all loved what he did for Vandy, and while I wish that he would not be so public with his comments, I wouldn’t mind if he came to Houston. But, since that’s not going to happen, I would like for his sake to end up in Nashville. (But, for my sake as a Texans fan, I hope that he never ends up in Dallas or Nashville).

David Climer, the Titanics beat writer for the Tennessean, wrote an interesting article about Wonderlic6 and the signing of Kerry Collins. He also adds an interesting thought if the team resigns P. Simms:
