Texans select OLB Whitney Mercilus in 1st round

Posted by: Chris on April 26th at 8:49PM

Love this pick.

I wasn’t sure Whitney Mercilus would be around at 26, but he was. Of course I wasn’t sure that the Texans would actually select Mercilus even if he was there at 26, but they did and call me a happy Texans fan tonight. Projected late 1st/early 2nd WRs Stephen Hill, Reuben Randle, Mohamed Sanu, and Alshon Jeffery were all still on the board. I would have been okay with Randle if Nick Perry and Mercilus were off the board – but lo and behold they were there for the taking, and I’m thrilled.

So let me get this straight – next season, QBs have to deal with Brian Cushing, Connor Barwin, Brooks Reed, JJ Watt, Antonio Smith, and Whitney Mercilus among the Texans’ front seven? Whoa. That’s a lot of high-motor monsters headed toward guys like… Blaine Gabbert. BUAHAHAHA!

Can’t wait to see what happens tomorrow night! I expect we will see either or both of a WR and an OLineman.

Wanted to trade up for Mercy-less or get Konz at 26 so I’m stoked with the pick. Didn’t think he’d still be there. Can’t wait for tomorrow

Wouldn’t an offensive weapon like Fleener or Hill make more sense? What was the point of getting Bradie James if they planned on picking up another linebacker in the 1st? I don’t get it.

@Jmark, Bradie James and Mercilus play two different positions at LB especially in Wades style of Defense so thats why we chose him…
I am completely fine with Mercilus but damnit, if there wasnt a time when we needed a threat opposite of Andre, its now… remember, it wasnt our defense that cost us the game against Ravens, it was our offense (ie Jacoby). we showed that we can play damn good D w/o the likes of Mario. Yes, we can defintely get better on Defense which we did today, but i feel like we had a better chance of finding better value for OLB in the 2nd then a WR in the 2nd that can help our team right now. And with us picking #26 in the 2nd round, finding “legitimate” help at receiver at that pick is slim unless we move up which I highly doubt will happen. Wright/Hill/Fleener would of helped alot.

There is a huge amount of depth at wr this year but i have a feeling we will get an tackle or a guard in round 2

Don’t fret abot the wide receiver position. The Texans want Marvin Jones and he SHOULD be there at the back of round 2, though they may move up.

Stephanie Stradley did a piece with the guy from Rookie Scouting Portfolio, giving our unique criteria for Texans receivers (excel at blocking, played in hot weather, team captain, high motor, potential to overtake AJ in later years), and he said Michael Floyd and Marvin Jones fit the mold best.

Once that report came out, I expected the Texans to nab one of the top pass rushers in round 1 and patiently wait for Marvin Jones in round 2. This is a good move, folks. Trust your boys in Battle Red. :)

Im with you Kyle. To be honest I’m not up to date on Jones but I’m cool with that if he truly fits those criteria. As to other responses, we do need a receiving threat as priority one but other than possible Fleener there was no one there at 26 worthy of the pick. I’m happy so far, we’ll see after today
