Free Agency open thread, Tate trade rumor

Posted by: Chris on March 14th at 6:50PM

Day two saw no new movement from the Texans in Free Agency.

Ben Tate is allegedly being targeted by the Cleveland Browns via trade. I do NOT want to lose Tate, who is about as high quality depth as you can possibly get… but right now quality depth might be a luxury for the Texans, who are going to have some pretty important positions to address once the free agent dust settles.

Mario Williams remains in Buffalo. I firmly believe he is stringing the Bills along until he can get a meeting in Tennessee. I’ve said from the start he would land with the Titans, and I really think it would have already happened by now if not for the fact that the Titans are trying to get their meth-riddled teeth into Peyton Manning. I think the Titans are going to end up with either Peyton or Mario. I have to repeat – Mario is not going to, and was never going to stay in Houston. He would just have to leave too much money on the table. I would be OVERJOYED if I’m wrong.

Chris Myers is set to take a meeting with the Titans on Thursday. We’ll see if he ever makes it, or if Green Bay jumps back in the hunt. The Texans allegedly have a deal waiting for him if he wants it, but obviously it’s lower than he thinks he can get elsewhere.

Mike Brisiel is said to have a meeting set up with the Raiders. He would join former Texan coaches Frank Pollack (Texans assistant offensive line coach, now Raiders offensive line coach) and Greg Knapp (former Texans quarterback coach, now Raiders offensive coordinator).

Lawrence Vickers signed a two-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys.

Joel Dreessen is said to have a meeting set up with the New Orleans Saints, who can’t even place a proper value on their quarterback, but can set a proper value on purposely injuring an opposing player.

Eric Winston took his meeting with Miami, and has several other meetings set up. One of the meetings is with Baltimore, which is where I hope he ends up.

Sigh. This has been a ROUGH free agency period.

i think the #22 for tate would be acceptable, ward and a late round system RB could provide enough depth behind arian. mario leaving means either the #22 or #26 is likely to be used on a pass rusher. myers leaving would hurt the most. even a top rookie C or another FA will lead to a drop off in OLine production. brisiel and winston will prob be replaced by caldwell and butler; with some late picks and FAs for depth behind them. vickers and dreessen leaving will lead to the breaking out of THOR. if the texans can keep just one of their FAs, Myers would be it. and then they should promptly turn around and make sure they extend who they need to extend, smartly, so that this BS doesn’t happen again.

The Texans invested in alot of depth players over the years in order to buffer against free agent losses. You can’t re-sign all of your free agents. They have capable replacements at right guard, right tackle, tight end and fullback, so I don’t think those are issues. Myers is the only one the Texans don’t have a replacement for, so I hope they re-sign him. I sure hope they don’t trade Tate because the depth there was awesome last year.
On Mario Williams, I’m not a huge fan of retaining his services. I view Mario as a good, but not great, player who is going to be overpaid. He may become a great player in the future, but he’s not one now. He was drafted as the centerpiece of the 4-3 defense and he failed to make that defense even average. He has alot of apologists out there, but the end results are what they are: he played on bad defenses. After multiple failures, they brought in Wade and basically scrapped the Mario experiment. He looked clumsy as a linebacker and he probably just wants to go to a 4-3 team and make alot of money. I don’t think winning is important to Mario. He’s never played for a winner, starting with NC State. The Texans were finally a winner last year when he didn’t play. The defense was good when he didn’t play. A loser like Buffalo and Wannstedt’s 4-3 are likely good fits for him. The Texans should just draft someone who is a better fit and move on.

This is screwed up! Texans just need to take care of business before it gets to free agency! It took forever for us to fix are offensive line and now we may look at three starters gone because of our lack of skills at ballance the cap! The cap is useless it breaks up good teams that’s all it accomplishes! They need to cap players not teams! Well I hope we can resign our o-line if not we will screw our chances of getting a receiver in the draft so it’s hello jacoby !!! Yippie o-joy
