OLB Brooks Reed, CB Brandon Harris join Texans

Posted by: Chris on April 30th at 12:02AM

Day two… I love it. Brooks Reed isn’t the top guy I would have taken in the second, but you bet he was on my list. Brandon Harris – that pick I absolutely LOVE. The Texans gave up their third and their fifth to the New England Patriots for Harris, who many feel has first round talent.

The Texans lost a pick, but I’m okay with that. They made a decision to trade up for a guy who they feel can make an impact right away, and I’m fine with that. I want guys who can PLAY on this team. I’m good with going for a specific talent over compiling bodies. Not so much in the first, and not normally in the second – but for a talent like Harris who I really thought was going to end up going in the first round – I love love love it. I’m happy.

So what’s the word? Do you think the Texans gave up too much to move up and nab Harris? I don’t. This guy’s gonna be a player. Reed I like too, but I love that the Texans showed some gumption and moved up to get a player. The defense has now been improved in three areas, defensive line, linebackers, and secondary.

We’ll see what day three brings.

Finally, it looks like we are valuing talent that will help us win now rather than accumulating another 5th round tight end with upside (as I saw on another post). Athletic guys who meet glaring defensive needs; were productive college players against good competition; play with high motors; are strong; with no obvious character issues; and work hard…what’s not to like? I’m usually critical of Smith/Kubiak but not this year (no matter how the players pan out). Maybe Wade is making a difference. Give them an A for the draft so far (is there a strong safety in our future?) and let’s get this labor cr-p solved and PLAY.

I’m hoping for an ILB today (Matthews, Hertzlig). Depth and Special Teams. I’m not sure there’s a NT, WR or S that would be any better than we have. They’ll probably draft a FB, which means they’re not paying Leach. With the addition of the first 3 picks, Wade, and Ryans, Barwin, Cushing hopefully returning to form, our defense has a chance to be good. We still need a FA vet corner and safety.

2nd round picks start, 3rd round picks may start but make the team, 5th rounds end up on the practice squad or special teams. This was a very good move by the Texans.
