[UPDATE] I don’t hate this pick. I have nothing against Watt. He’s certainly not an exciting choice, but he’s a great fit for the team, and if defensive guru Wade Phillips says he’s the guy, then fine. I just wanted Robert Quinn and Cameron Jordan more, that’s all. Just like I preferred Dan Williams and Devin McCourty last year, and just like I preferred Clay Matthews the year before. I’m sure Watt will be fine – but I’m seriously intrigued at Quinn’s high ceiling, and Jordan’s versatility.
That said, who can blame the Texans for going after a “safe” pick? They needed a sure thing, and Watt just may be a sure thing to be a solid to very good NFL player.
Original Entry:
*YAWN*
Better this (in my opinion) than Prince Amukamara. But I would have preferred Robert Quinn or Cameron Jordan… and Nick Fairley, but the Texans would never take him.
Initial thoughts… safe pick. Quinn has WAY more upside, but the Texans are terrible at drafting defensive players, so I guess it makes sense that they’d take a guy who they are sure can at least be a good player.
Watt has the proverbial relentless motor, but where does he play in Wade’s 3-4? He seems to be a sure thing to be a 5-technique DE. It will be interesting to see what the plan is going forward. But again, I must stress – yawn.

This draft is interesting so far, but would be more interesting if teams could trade players for picks. Hopefully, teams will improve upon their ability to get value for their draft position. There have been some real busts over the past few years, Leaf and Russell, just to name two. Over the past 15 years or so, Pittsburgh has gotten the most value for its picks and Detroit has gotten the least.

Wasn’t expecting this … especially with Fairly on the board, but hope this helps get us to a championship.

Why, WHY do I care…
Did we draft a back up 5 technique or will we eat Antonio Smith’s contract??? Maybe Maria,er Mario will play OLB for us. We just drafted Jason Babin all over again. UUUUUUUggghhhh!!!!!
Where’s the hard stuff…

Lineman version of Cush (rookie juice version). Provides MUCH NEEDED depth on the d line and it will be intreating to see how Wade handles the rotation. I can definitely see JJ playing the 4i or 3 tech on passing downs with Mario and Smith as the DEs. If you want entertainment go watch something else! I love the pick!!

I am warming up to this pick, the Texans draft will be made in day #2. Seems like defense is the way for this years draft. It also seems that Wade Phillips has initiated a new draft ideology in Houston.
With the Watt pick, he is no slouch and came out as a junior. The Texans need to add depth everywhere. This was the BPA not a reach pick, IMO.
Ready for day #2.

We complain and complain in past drafts that we reach for need then when we pick the “highest ranked player on our board” according to Wade from the mothership we get our panties in a knot. Watt is a great football player and more importantly he actually fits our scheme. This was the best available according to Wade and they took him.

I wasnt happy at first but i am also warming up to pick..I would of rather saw quinn or amukamara cuz i think they could of helped out the pass defense alot..
but jj does have a great motor and is very versitile..
with pick 2 i hope they get rahim moore or stephen peua or whatever his last name is.. ha

I like Jordan better but I’m warming up to the pick as for Quinn there r players almost as good in the 2nd every rush lb is there so it seems like it may have been a good move. Everyone was iffy on Prince and Fairely is a bust he is an underachieving one year wonder.

With the scenario that was laid out I would have rather had quinn. I can see why they passed quin even though I still think he would be a stud in wade’s defense. I think he will get significant time in rotation with the three. I did not think it was a reach either like last year’s pick of Kareem. Some people were mad that we did not trade back. First of all we tried to and could not. A reach was what the seahawks did. I am fine with the pick even though it was not my first choice. in the scenario that was the case at the time I liked jordan and Quinn more but at the same time I do not fault them for taking him. This is simialar to how I felt after the cushing pick. I liked matthews but I could see the reasoning behind cushing.

I hate the pick. Also, there’s no such thing as a safe pick in the draft or a sure thing. J.J. Watt could be a bust just like any other player. But anyway, that’s why there’s no point in getting worked up about who the Texans should pick because we already knew weren’t going to do the right thing or the logical thing, much less do something impressive with the pick. Only one mock out of the 38 got it right. Hey, they have to continue the hilarity of the Kubiak era somehow. Like I said, they didn’t trade up and they drafted someone who won’t start right away at DE because they are on a two year schedule (probably under the assumption that either Mario or Smith will be gone next year). Don’t assume for a second that Kubiak’s job is in jeopardy this year. At least the Kareem Jackson pick last year addressed a need. I can’t find anything redeeming about this pick, however, other than the ease with which a derogatory nickname can be conjured.

The pick leaves a lot of questions and little answers. Good player or not, JJ Watt plays a position with to solid starters (as of now). I’m just curious if we had any trade down offers. I wish Jacksonville would have made that trade with us but trading within the division is rare.

I like the pick, but you’d think they could have traded down. If Watt gets taken before us, Jordan was there. Makes me wonder if they plan to trade Mario or maybe use him as the OLB. Watt is no Jason Babin – he’s 6’5″ and 290 with a great work ethic.

Not my first pick, but I like the idea of putting Mario out there as a OLB and telling him to go get the 2 new rookie Qb’s and peyton. Antonio and J.J. could be the bookends and get a true NT in round 2 or 3. I hated this pick at first, but remember that Wade’s defense will not be vanilla. I hope that the Texans will finally give me what I have been screaming for for years, a defense that is respected in this league.

i dont know what the idea really was. Im guess they gon make watt gain about 20 lbs and make him play 0 tech or move mario to the 9 tech which i dont think he would really like, he to big

We need to get a respected NT by trading away Ben Tate. We should also pick up a quick running back through the FA to be a change of pace back. GET RID OF SLATON!
